This course
fulfills the D.1. (Science/Mathematics) general education requirement
and should be taken concurrently with Biology 207.
It will help you attain this general education goal and its corresponding
objectives: An understanding of the scientific method and a knowledge
of natural science and its relevance in our lives,
specifically:
1. How scientific
knowledge is created, developed, and changed through experimentation
and reasoning,
2. Demonstration of knowledge in one or more of the sciences, including
theories, concepts, and
principles that explain observations and make predictions,
3. How to locate and evaluate reliable resources to acquire information
about scientific developments, and the outlining of
the reciprocal relationship between humans and the rest of the
ecosystem.
PREREQUISITES:
No prerequisites are required for this course but introductory
knowledge of biology and chemistry would be beneficial.
OBJECTIVES:
To introduce and provide experience with some fundamental laboratory
techniques necessary for the study of microbes.
LAB MANUAL:
Microbiology Laboratory for the Health Science Student; a Clinical
Approach. First Edition, All students are required to purchase
or download (see below) a new laboratory manual. Using previously
used lab manuals is not permitted.

ATTENDANCE:
Every laboratory period must be attended punctually and entirely
(See section on GRADING).
EXAMS:
Three exams will be given. Exam I (50 points) will be given during
the first hour of period 5 and will cover material from labs
1-4. Exam II (50 points) will be given the first hour of or prior
to period 9 and will cover material from labs 5-7. Exam III (100
points) will be given during Period 15 and cover material from

GRADING: Each
student's Term Letter Grade (TLG) will be determined by the scores
earned on the three exams (200 total points) plus credit for
each of 13 laboratory periods in which each student is required
to complete and record exercise data. The instructor
reserves the right to randomly request your laboratory data pages
to assure their completion and evaluate performance. Four (4)
points will be earned after completing each laboratory period
and recording the data from that period in your laboratory manual.
These points
will be summed to obtain a Cumulative Score. The maximum
number of points awarded will be 150 (test scores) + 44 (11 completed
laboratories) = 194.

REQUIRED
MATERIALS:
Students are required to have an acceptable form of
laboratory outerwear. The current policy regarding laboratory outerware
is as follows: If you are aware of any accident, spill or contamination
to your laboratory outerware, the garment is to be sterilized before
it leaves the facility. Students working
with laboratory staining reagents are required to wear ANSI Z87.1-1989
high impact eye protection. - see schedule for designated lab
exercises (*).
